45-MILE  COURSE

For the rider who enjoys a challenging and beautifully scenic loop with less of a time commitment, we offer you what is known locally as “The Wild Peanut” loop. This route, with its 3,500ft of climbing, offers up great views of Mt. Shasta, the Trinity Alps and the Chanchelulla Wildernesses. As you ride out to the first climb, you pass through the once booming town of Peanut, which in its heyday had a school and numerous timber mills—large and small—and many gold claims along Salt Creek. At the intersection with Hwy. 36 you turn left (east) and continue to climb for a couple of more miles, ending up on a fast downhill into the upper Hayfork Creek area and the former site of a once-booming mill at your right and a large ranch typical of the early 1900s to your left. Continuing along the ride, you come to the small town of Wildwood and the Wildwood Store, where you will turn left onto Wildwood Road and begin to make your way back to Hayfork following Hayfork Creek through a gorgeous canyon, sometimes down close to the creek and alternately high above on the sinuous and narrow road. This is a classic for the road rider, with twisty ups and downs and views at every turn, passing by old ranching and mining sites as you near the left turn onto Hwy. 3 and the final 6 miles back to the fairgrounds. This is a choice ride for the beginning and intermediate cyclist.
